QUESTION:
Clarification is sought regarding the following matter: How many shares in a large animal can be allocated for aqiqah?
ANSWER:
Up to seven shares in a large animal can be allocated for Aqiqah, just as seven shares are permissible in Qurbani (sacrifice), because the same rulings and conditions that apply to Qurbani also apply to Aqiqah. In fact, it is established from the Sahabah (companions) that they performed Aqiqah for several children from one camel.
The rulings and conditions of Aqiqah are the same as those of Qurbani. It is mentioned in Al-Uqud al-Durriyyah:
”حكمها كأحكام الأضحية“
“Its rulings are like the rulings of Udhiyah (Qurbani).”
(Al-Uqud al-Durriyyah fi Tanqih al-Fatawa al-Hamidiyyah, Vol. 2, Pg. 213, Dar al-Ma‘rifah)
It is stated in Fatawa Razawiyyah:
“One cow can suffice for the Aqiqah of one to seven individuals.”
(Fatawa Razawiyyah, Vol. 20, Pg. 593, Raza Foundation, Lahore)
In another place, it is mentioned:
“A cow or camel is sufficient on behalf of seven children, whereas a sheep or goat is not sufficient for more than one child, just as in Udhiyah (Qurbani).”
(Fatawa Razawiyyah, Vol. 20, Pg. 581, Raza Foundation, Lahore)
It is mentioned in Fatawa Amjadiyyah:
“For Aqiqah, the same animals may be slaughtered that are permissible for Qurbani. If a cow, buffalo, or camel is slaughtered, then up to seven shares may be included in it. One share is sufficient for a girl, while two shares are required for a boy.”
(Fatawa Amjadiyyah, Vol. 3, Pg. 305, Maktabah Razawiyyah, Aram Bagh, Karachi)
