Question
What is the ruling for a muqtadi who started his sunnah mokada or sunnah gher mokada and he hasn’t done his first sajda yet and the jamaat starts.
Is he allowed to break his namaz and join the Jamaat?

الجواب بعون الملك الوهاب اللهم هداية الحق والصواب
Answer
If a person has started sunnah ghair mu’akkadah or nawafil prayers and during this time the jama’ah commences, he should not immediately break his prayer to join the jama’ah. Rather, he should complete two rak’ahs and give salam, and then join the jama’ah, even if he has not yet performed the sajdah of the first rak’ah. And if he is in the third rak’ah, he should complete four rak’ahs.
Likewise, if one is performing sunnah mu’akkadah prayers and the jama’ah commences, one may also complete two rak’ahs and give salam, although it is better to complete the entire prayer (four rak’ahs) and then join the jama’ah.
It is stated in Bahar-e-Shariat: “If one had started nawafil and the jama’ah commenced, one should not break it; rather, one should complete two rak’ahs, even if one has not yet performed the sajdah of the first rak’ah. And if one is praying the third rak’ah, one should complete four. If during the performance of the sunnah prayers of Jumu’ah or Zuhr, the khutbah or jama’ah commenced, one should complete all four.”
