QUESTION:
Can a person give his entire Zakat money to one person who is eligible to take Zakat?
ANSWER:
All of one’s Zakah may be given to a single Shar‘i Faqir (legally eligible poor person). However, if the amount of Zakah is so much that the Shar‘i Faqir himself becomes Sahib-e-Nisab (i.e., he now possesses wealth equal to or exceeding the Nisab threshold), then it is Makruh (disliked) to give the entire Zakah to that one person. Nevertheless, if it is given, the Zakah will still be validly discharged.
However, if the Shar‘i Faqir is genuinely needy — for example, he has a large family such that if the amount is distributed among them, each would receive less than Nisab, or he is in debt such that after deducting his debt nothing remains or less than Nisab remains — then in such cases, giving him up to the amount of Nisab is not Makruh.
It is stated in Bahar-e-Shari‘at: If the Zakah amount is less than Nisab, then it is preferable (Afzal) to give it to one person. Giving one person an amount equal to Nisab is Makruh, but if it is given, the obligation is fulfilled. Giving one person up to Nisab is Makruh when he is not in debt; however, if he is indebted, then giving him enough such that after paying off the debt nothing remains or less than Nisab remains is not Makruh. Likewise, if the poor person has dependents, such that although the amount equals or exceeds Nisab, when distributed among his family each receives less than Nisab, then there is no harm in giving it.
