Question:
How should an impure utensil be purified if it does not absorb impurity? And what is the method of purification if the utensil has cracks or pores?
ANSWER:
If a utensil made of such a material that does not absorb impurity, such as porcelain (chinaware), silver, or stainless steel, becomes impure then washing it three times is sufficient for purification, after which the utensil will become pure. However, if the utensil has tiny pores through which impurity can be absorbed, such as an earthen pot, or if it has cracks due to damage, then the method of purification is as follows:
First, wash the utensil once and set it aside until the dripping of water stops. Then wash it a second time in the same manner and set it aside again (until it stops dripping). Finally, repeat this a third time. After this, the utensil will be considered pure.
If the impurity has formed a solid layer, it is necessary to remove this layer; otherwise, the utensil will not be purified.
Imam Ahmad Rida Khan عليه الرحمة states:
“A smooth earthen utensil that has sealed pores, such as a cooking pot, will be purified just like a copper vessel by washing it three times. However, if the utensil is not like this, such as water pots, then the method of purification is to wash it once and leave it until no more drops fall and no moisture remains. Then, wash it a second time and leave it again. Finally, wash it a third time in the same manner, and it will become pure. A porcelain utensil that has a crack (a visible break or line) should also be washed and dried in the same way three times. But if it is intact (without any cracks), simply washing it three times is sufficient. However, if the impurity has a solid form (such as dried filth), then removing that solid part is absolutely necessary for purification. Drying means that when touched, there should not be enough wetness (in the utensil) that the hands become wet, slight dampness or moisture is not an issue. Drying it under sunlight or shade specifically is also not a condition.”
