[Q 362] Supplications in Jalsah Between Sajdahs

Question

What are all the things one can recite in jalsah between the sajdahs?

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم
الجواب بعون الملك الوهاب اللهم هداية الحق والصواب

Answer

In the jalsah (the sitting position between the two prostrations), it is necessary to pause for at least the amount of time it takes to say Subhan Allah once. During this time, the worshipper can remain silent or make dua (supplication). As for the supplication, it is mustahabb (recommended) for the imam, the follower, and the individual praying alone to recite the supplicatory words “اللهم اغفر لي” (O Allah, forgive me) between the two sajdahs. Reciting a lengthy dua is makruh (disliked).
When a person is praying nafl (voluntary prayer) alone, it is permissible for them to make any supplication in Arabic between the two sajdahs, even if the supplication is somewhat long.

It is mentioned in Radd al-Muhtar:

ينبغي أن يندب الدعاء بالمغفرة بين السجدتين خروجاً من خلاف الإمام أحمد لإبطاله الصلاة بتركه عامداً، ولم أر من صرح بذلك عندنا، لكن صرحوا باستحباب مراعاة الخلاف

(Radd al-Muhtar, Book of Salah, Issue: Lengthening Ruku’, Vol. 2, p. 261, Dar al-Ma’rifah, Beirut)

In Fatawa Razawiyyah, Imam Ahmed Raza Khan رحمه الله stated regarding supplication between the two sajdahs:”Saying ‘اللهم اغفر لي’ (O Allah, forgive me) between the two sajdahs is mustahabb for the imam, the follower, and the individual praying alone, and reciting a long dua is makruh for all of them, though it is not a problem for an individual in nafl prayers.”
