Answer

In Hadith literature, many virtues of Hajj Mabrūr have been alluded to, so much so that one Hadith states that the reward of Hajj Mabrur is Paradise!

There are varying scholarly opinions on what Hajj Mabrur actually is:

– Hajj Mabrur refers to the Hajj that has been accepted (in the Generous Court of Allah).

– Hajj Mabrur refers to the Hajj in which sins are avoided.

– Hajj Mabrur refers to the Hajj in which there is no ostentation and pretension and in which one refrains from blameworthy speech and actions.

– Hajj Mabrur refers to the Hajj that is performed with lawful earnings and in a valid manner.

– Hajj Mabrur refers to that Hajj after which the person abstains from sins until his final breath.

One sign of Hajj Mabrur is that the person transforms into a better state and does not revert to his sins.

Another sign is that the person becomes completely detached from the material world and longs for the afterlife.

In regards to the high rank of Hajj Mabrur, it is narrated in Sahih Bukhari by Hazrat Abu Hurayrah رضي الله تعالى عنه that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said,

“العمرۃ إلی العمرۃ کفارۃ لما بینھما والحج المبرور لیس لہ جزاء إلا الجنۃ”

“Performing one Umrah after another Umrah absolves all the sins committed between them, and there’s no reward for Hajj Mabrur except Paradise.”

(Sahih Bukhari, Volume 3, Chapter on Umrah, Page 5, Published by Dar al-Tafasil)

Allamah Ali Qari عليه الرحمة records different scholarly statements relating to Hajj Mabrur in Mirqat al-Mafatih:

قال النووی: الأصح أن المبرور ھو الذی لایخالطہ إثم، وقیل: المتقبل، وقیل: الذی لا ریاء فیہ ولا سمعۃ ولا رفث ولا فسوق، وقیل: الذی لا معصیۃ بعدہ

“Imam Nawawi states, the most correct opinion is that Hajj Mabrur is the Hajj in which no sin is committed.

Another opinion states that Hajj Mabrur is that Hajj that has been accepted (in the Generous Court of Allah).

Another opinion states that Hajj Mabrur is that Hajj that contains no ostentation, pretension, and is free of vulgar speech and actions.

Yet another opinion states that Hajj Mabrur is that Hajj after which no sin is committed.”

Mufti Ahmad Yar Khan Naeemi عليه الرحمة writes,

“It is the Hajj that is performed with lawful earnings, in a valid manner, with complete sincerity, and until death no act is done that would invalidate the Hajj.”

(Mirqat al-Masabih, Volume 4, Page 96, Naeemi Book House, Gujrat)

Allama Shami عليه الرحمة writes about the sign of Hajj Mabrur:

“علامۃ الحج المبرور أن یعود خیرا مما کان”

Translation: “The sign of Hajj Mabrur is that the person returns from it in a better state than before.”

(Al-Durr al-Mukhtar, Volume 4, Book of Hajj, Chapter on Hady, Page 56, Dar al-Kutub al-Ilmiyyah, Beirut)

Imam Rida Khan عليه الرحمة writes in Fatawa Ridawiyyah:

“The sign of Hajj Mabrur is that one returns in a better state than before.”

(Fatawa Ridawiyyah, Volume 24, Page 467, Raza Foundation, Lahore)

It is mentioned in Qut al-Quloob that Hazrat Hasan Basri رضي الله تعالى عنه was asked about the sign of Hajj Mabrur, to which he replied,

“أن یرجع العبد زاھدا فی الدنیا راغبا فی الآخرۃ”

“The sign of Hajj Mabrur is that a person returns from it in a state of detachment from the world and with a longing for the afterlife.”
