[Q 606] Importance of Bay‘ah in Islam

QUESTION:

a person learns his tajweed fiqh seerah and aqeedah from their local imam what’s the point of a murshid?

ANSWER:

Becoming a disciple (mureed) of a Pir (spiritual guide) who fulfils all the necessary conditions is Sunnah, and it has many benefits. Among them are the following:

1. Maintaining a connected chain of affiliation (nisbat) with the Noble Prophet صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم.

2. At the time of death, and in the grave and the Day of Judgement, difficulties are eased through the blessings of the perfected saints (Awliya-e-Kamilin).

3. Receiving assistance from the righteous (Saliheen) in worldly difficulties.

4. Through the blessings of a perfect spiritual guide (Pir-e-Kamil), love for good deeds and hatred for sins is instilled in the heart of the disciple.

5. A perfect spiritual guide brings the disciple closer to Allah تعالى.

Besides these, countless other benefits have been mentioned by the noble scholars (Ulama) and great Sufis (Sufiya) in the books of Tasawwuf (Islamic spirituality).

Sayyidi A‘la Hazrat Imam Ahmad Raza Khan عليه الرحمة states in Fatawa Razawiyyah:

“Becoming a disciple is Sunnah, and through it there is a continuous connection with the Messenger of Allah صلى ﷲ تعالى عليه وسلم.
If, with sound belief, one remains affiliated with an authentic connected chain (silsilah), then those who possess spiritual insight witness its blessings even now, and those who do not will see its benefits at the time of death, in the grave, and on the Day of Judgement.”

(Fatawa Razawiyyah, Vol. 26, p. 569)
