QUESTION:

My question is regarding interest money that banks put onto savings accounts. I understand it is haram to spend and has to be given away for no reward.
However are we able to give it to our siblings for no rewards to pay of debs/ loans etc ?

ANSWER:

If your siblings are Shar‘i Faqeer (Shari‘ee faqeer – legally poor according to Islamic law) — meaning they do not possess wealth equal to the value of saṛhay bāwan tolay chāndi (the nisab equivalent of 52.5 tolas of silver) in the form of sona (gold), chāndi (silver), rupiya paisa (cash), māl-e-tijarat (trade goods), and belongings beyond basic necessities (ḥājat-e-aṣliyya – essential personal needs), and they are also not Hashmi (Hashmi – from the lineage of Banu Hashim) — then you may give this money to them.
After receiving it, it is their choice; if they wish they may use it to pay their qarz (debt/loan) or spend it elsewhere.
