[Q 740] Jaw Movement During Quran Recitation

Question

Hope all is well dear scholars. How is it to move your jaw while reciting the quran in salah?

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم
الجواب بعون الملك الوهاب اللهم هداية الحق والصواب

Answer

Moving the tongue, lips, and jaw to correctly pronounce letters while reciting the Holy Qur’an during Salat is permissible. In fact, moving the tongue and lips is necessary for the recitation to be valid. Merely moving the jaw, without pronouncing letters with the tongue and lips, is not sufficient for recitation. This is because qira’at (recitation) and other awrad (litanies) must be recited at least loudly enough so that, in the absence of noise and hearing impairment, one can hear one’s own voice.

Therefore, the Holy Qur’an should be recited in such a way that the letters are pronounced correctly. However, one should avoid moving the jaw unnecessarily or excessively.
