[Q 744] Reward of Congregational Prayer: Mosque vs. Home

Question

We hear the reward of reading with Jamaat is multiplied by 27.

Is this correct? and is this Jamaat anywhere or just Jamaat in the Masjid?

Answer

Yes, it is stated in the blessed Ahadith concerning congregational prayer that the reward for congregational prayer is twenty-seven degrees superior to individual prayer. Another blessed Hadith mentions twenty-five degrees more. Scholars have explained various reasons for this difference; one such reason is that this difference is based on the purity and piety of the worshippers and the number of worshippers in the congregation.

Regarding whether this reward is obtained by establishing a congregation anywhere or if it is specific to the mosque’s congregation, firstly, remember that there is the virtue of congregation itself, and secondly, the virtue of praying in the mosque. The reward for going to the mosque is also mentioned. In the mosque’s congregation, there is the manifestation of the symbols of Islam, the virtue of the mosque itself, as well as a large number of congregants, and all these acts are sources of reward.

The reward mentioned in the aforementioned blessed Ahadith pertains to establishing a congregation in general, whether it is at home, a hostel, or any other place, or in the mosque. Wherever prayer is performed in congregation, the virtue of congregation mentioned in the blessed Hadith will be attained. However, the reward for congregation in the mosque is certainly greater due to the inclusion of other acts that bring reward.

It is also necessary to know another important Shariah ruling here: that congregational prayer in the mosque is wajib for men, and abandoning it without a valid Shariah excuse is impermissible and sinful, provided the mosque is nearby and the Imam is sound in belief (sahih al-aqeedah), has correct recitation (sahih al-qira’ah), and knows the basic rulings of purity and prayer. Establishing a congregation at home does not mean that the primary congregational prayer in the mosque is no longer wajib. Rather, it remains wajib, and abandoning it without a valid Shariah excuse is impermissible and sinful.

Regarding the virtue of congregational prayer, it is mentioned in the blessed Ahadith:

Ibn Umar reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Congregational prayer is twenty-seven degrees superior to individual prayer.”

(Mishkat al-Masabih, vol. 1, p. 332, Hadith no. 1052)

Allama Aini رحمه الله, while mentioning various narrations regarding the reward of congregation in the blessed Ahadith, states:

(Umdat al-Qari Sharh Sahih al-Bukhari, vol. 4, p. 259)

In the blessed Hadith, the reward for going to the mosque and praying is also mentioned. In one blessed Hadith, it is stated:

Abu Hurayrah reported from the Prophet ﷺ: “A man’s prayer in congregation increases his prayer in his house and his prayer in his market by twenty-five degrees. For indeed, when one of you performs wudu well, and comes to the mosque intending nothing but prayer, he does not take a single step except that Allah raises him by one degree or absolves him of a sin, until he enters the mosque. And when he enters the mosque, he is considered to be in prayer as long as he is detained by it, and the angels pray for him as long as he remains in his sitting place therein, saying: ‘O Allah, forgive him. O Allah, have mercy on him,’ as long as he does not cause harm or break his wudu there.”

(Umdat al-Qari Sharh Sahih al-Bukhari, vol. 4, p. 257)

It is mentioned in Mirqat al-Mafatih:

(Mirqat al-Mafatih Sharh Mishkat al-Masabih, vol. 3, p. 831)

Regarding whether the reward for congregational prayer is exclusive to the mosque or if the reward for congregation can be obtained anywhere, such as at home, refer to the statements of the scholars:

It is mentioned in Umdat al-Qari:

(Umdat al-Qari Sharh Sahih al-Bukhari, vol. 4, p. 260)

It is mentioned in Mirqat al-Mafatih:

(Mirqat al-Mafatih Sharh Mishkat al-Masabih, vol. 3, p. 831)

It is mentioned in fiqh books:

(Ghunyat al-Mutamalli, vol. 2, p. 185)

It is mentioned in Fatawa Qadi Khan:

(Fatawa Qadi Khan, vol. 1, p. 145)

Congregational prayer in the mosque is primarily wajib for men; it is stated in Fatawa Ridawiyyah Sharif:

“In this treatise (Husn al-Bara’ah fi Tanqid Hukm al-Jama’ah), we have proven from the Ahadith of Abdullah ibn Abbas, Abu Hurayrah, Buraydah, Ka’b ibn Ujrah, Anas ibn Malik, Uthman Ghani, Amr ibn Umm Maktum, Abu Umamah, Jabir ibn Abdullah, and others رضي الله تعالى عنهم, that the Holy Prophet ﷺ made attendance obligatory upon hearing the Adhan. A person knowledgeable in language can understand from these same Ahadith for which congregation the Adhan calls and why the Shariah makes responding to it obligatory.”

(Fatawa Ridawiyyah Sharif, vol. 7, p. 101)

Imam Ahl-e-Sunnat رحمه الله states at another place:

“The five daily prayers in the mosque with congregation are wajib. Abandoning even one time without a valid excuse is a sin.”

(Fatawa Ridawiyyah Sharif, vol. 7, p. 194)

Sayyidi Imam Ahl-e-Sunnat states in the context of a ruling:

“Attendance at the mosque is wajib for men.”

(Fatawa Ridawiyyah Sharif, vol. 7, p. 208)
