QUESTION:
Mufti Sahib, I hope you are well. I wanted to know if it’s a sin to wear tight clothing that doesn’t reveal Sitr in front of others.
ANSWER:
Clothing is a great blessing granted by Allah Almighty, for person alongside attaining covering and adornment, also attains many other benefits. This blessing and some of its benefits has also been mentioned in the Qur’an. Therefore, it is necessary that one, considering it a favour from Allah, uses it according to the teachings of Islam—the religion of mercy and blessing—and refrains from every style or form that goes against Allah’s pleasure.
Unfortunately, just as other moral corruptions are rapidly increasing in society today, the Islamic rulings regarding clothing are also being ignored in the name of fashion and modern standards. Either the clothes do not cover the whole sitr (i.e. obligatory areas to cover) in the first place; sleeves, chest, and neck remain exposed. Or the clothes are so thin that the skin colour becomes visible, or they are so tight and fitted that the shape and contours of the feminine body parts become clearly noticeable.
Whereas the Islamic principle regarding women’s clothing is very very clear: a woman’s entire body is included in sitr, except the face, the palms, and the feet — meaning that it is Farḍ for a woman to cover this much before non-mahrams (those males with whom marriage is not absolutely, and always haram). And due to fear of fitnah, women today are also instructed to observe face-veiling (Niqab).
Therefore, a woman’s clothing must be such that it properly conceals the body, and any clothing which does not cover the body, or apparently covers the body but is so thin that the skin colour shows through, or is not thin but is so tight that the form and outline of body parts become visible, then such clothing is completely impermissible and a sin to wear before non-mahrams — and in many cases even before mahrams (close male relatives she can never marry), such as when the shape of the hips or thighs becomes apparent. Such clothing is not modesty; rather, it is immodesty.
Regarding women who wear such clothing, the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم said that they will not even smell the fragrance of Paradise.
Allah Almighty says:
“Those who desire that indecency spreads within Muslims, there is painful punishment for them in this world and the Hereafter.”
(Sūrah an-Nūr, 24:19)
Promoting a culture of shameless and immodest clothing is also one of the forms of spreading indecency. Those involved in this should think: how will they show their faces before their Lord on the Day of Judgment? And what answer will they give for promoting this culture despite the clear rulings of the Qur’an? Certainly, they will not be able to answer.
Allah Almighty says:
“O children of Ādam! Indeed, We have sent down upon you clothing to cover your private parts and ˹clothing as˺ adornment.
(Sūrah al-A‘rāf, 7:26)
Allah Almighty forbidding immodesty says:
“And do not be unveiled like the unveiling of the age of Ignorance.”
(Sūrah al-Aḥzāb, 33:33)
Mufti Amjad Ali A‘zami عليه الرحمة writes:
“A thick cloth through which the skin colour does not appear, but which clings tightly to the body so that the shape of the limbs is visible — Salah performed in such clothing will be valid, but it is not permissible for others to look at the limb whose shape is visible, and wearing such clothing in front of people is also prohibited.”
