[Q 425] Incomplete Ayatul Kursi in Salah, Skipping End of Long Ayah in Prayer, Validity of Salah Without Full Ayah

QUESTION:

What the ruling about the namaz of who didn’t read the last part of aytul kursi As reading one full ayat is wajib

ANSWER:

It is Wajib (necessary) to recite Surah Al-Fatiha along with either three short verses, or one short Surah, or one long verse that is equal in length to three short verses. It is not specifically Wajib to recite one complete verse. If a person recites a long verse to the extent that it equals three short verses, even if the full verse is not completed, then the Wajib is fulfilled, and the Salah is valid without Sajdah Sahw (prostration of forgetfulness).

Therefore, if someone recites Ayatul Kursi only up to “وَ لَا یَـُٔوۡدُہٗ حِفۡظُہُمَا ۚ” during Salah, then this portion is equivalent to three short verses. As a result, the Wajib is fulfilled, and the Salah is valid without dislike (bila karahat) and without the need for Sajdah Sahw.

Imam Burhanuddin رحمه الله تعالى writes:

“وَإِذَا قَرَأَ آيَةً طَوِيلَةً فِي رَكْعَتَيْنِ نَحْوَ آيَةِ الْكُرْسِيِّ وَآيَةِ الْمُدَايَنَةِ قَرَأَهَا فِي رَكْعَتَيْنِ وَالْبَعْضَ فِي رَكْعَةٍ وَالْبَعْضَ فِي رَكْعَةٍ اخْتَلَفَ الْمَشَايِخُ فِيهِ عَلَى قَوْلِ أَبِي حَنِيفَةَ رَحِمَهُ اللهُ بَعْضُهُمْ قَالُوا: لَا يَجُوزُ؛ لِأَنَّهُ مَا قَرَأَ آيَةً تَامَّةً فِي كُلِّ رَكْعَةٍ، وَعَامَّتُهُمْ عَلَى أَنَّهُ يَجُوزُ؛ فَإِنَّ بَعْضَ هَذِهِ الْآيَاتِ تَزِيدُ عَلَى ثَلَاثِ آيَاتٍ قِصَارٍ أَوْ تَعْدِلُهَا، فَلَا تَكُونُ قِرَاءَتُهُ أَقَلَّ مِنْ قِرَاءَةِ ثَلَاثِ آيَاتٍ قِصَارٍ.”

“وضم اقصر سورة كالكوثر أو ما قام مقامها وهو ثلاث آيات قصار نحو ‘‘ثم نظر، ثم عبس وبسر، ثم أدبر واستكبر’’ وكذا لو كانت الآية أو الآيتان تعدل ثلاثا قصارا”

Sayyidi A‘la Hazrat Imam Ahl al-Sunnah Shah Imam Ahmad Raza Khan رحمه الله تعالى states:

“Reciting the full and complete Al-Hamd Sharif (Surah Al-Fatiha) is Wajib, and apart from it, it is Wajib to recite either one long verse or three short verses from any other Surah.”
