[Q 250] Performing Salah on a Moving Train

Question

Can we perform salah in moving train?

Answer

Fard (obligatory) and Wajib prayers, as well as the Sunnat of Fajr, cannot be adequately performed on a moving train. For these prayers, wait until the last possible time; if the train stops, perform them then, and if it does not stop, perform them on the train and later redo them with the proper conditions. If the train is stationary, you may stand and face the Qibla to pray on the train without the need to disembark.

Note: Apart from the Sunnat of Fajr, other Sunnan and Nafl (voluntary prayers) can be performed on a moving train.

It is stated in Fatawa Razawiyyah:

ٹھہری ہوئی ریل میں سب نمازیں جائز ہیں اور چلتی ہوئی میں سنتِ صبح کے سوا سب سنت و نفل جائز ہیں مگر فرض و وتر یا صبح کی سنتیں نہیں ہوسکتیں اہتمام کرے کہ ٹھہری میں پڑھے اور دیکھے کہ وقت جاتا ہے پڑھ لے اور جب ٹھہرے پھر پھیرے۔
