[Q 151] Traveler’s Exemption from Jummah Prayer Obligation

Question

If someone is a musafir (traveler) on Friday morning, then returns to their hometown before Asr Salah time has entered, however Jumua Salah has already been offered in local masjids, will they be considered as sinful for missing Jumua or are they excused due to being musafir (traveler)?

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

الجواب بعون الملك الوهاب اللهم هداية الحق والصواب

Answer

Friday (Jummah) prayer is not obligatory for a traveler, meaning that if he does not pray Jummah prayer, but instead prays Dhuhr prayer in place of Jummah prayer, he will not be a sinner. Therefore, if a person was a traveler on Friday morning and he performed Dhuhr prayer instead of Jummah prayer during his journey, and then he reached his home near the beginning of the time of Asr, he will not be a sinner for not praying Jummah prayer.

Note: If such a person (i.e traveler), does not pray Dhuhr prayer without a valid excuse and its time passes, he will be a great sinner.
