QUESTION:

Who is eligible to receive fitrana?

ANSWER:

The Masraf (eligible recipients) of Sadaqat al-Fitr (Fitrana) is the same as the Masraf of Zakah. The individuals who are entitled to receive Sadaqat al-Fitr and Zakah are those who are neither from Banu Hashim (such as Sayyids or ‘Abbasis, etc.) nor do they possess wealth or goods beyond their basic needs and usage whose value reaches the Nisab (seven and a half tolas of gold, or fifty-two and a half tolas of silver, or the current value of fifty-two and a half tolas of silver).
Such individuals may be given Zakah and Sadaqat al-Fitr.
