[Q 513] Janazah for One Who Commits Suicide

QUESTION:

Is janazah allowed to be prayed for one who commits suicide

ANSWER:

Committing suicide is severely impermissible and Haram (unlawful) and is an act that leads one to Hell. Concerning the one who commits suicide, severe warnings have been mentioned in the Qur’an-e-Paak (The Noble Qur’an) and Ahadith-e-Mubarakah (Blessed Prophetic narrations). However, as long as the person is a Muslim, then performing his Namaz-e-Janazah (funeral prayer) is Fard-e-Kifayah (a communal obligation).

If the news reaches a group of people and none of them perform the Janazah prayer, then all of them will be sinful. Yes, if ‘Ulama wa Mashaikh (religious scholars and spiritual guides) and Muqtada Peshwa Hazraat (prominent leading figures), for the purpose of admonition and warning, do not perform the prayer, while others do perform it, then there is no harm in this. Rather, this is more appropriate.

Similarly, for a Muslim who committed suicide, making Du‘a-e-Maghfirat (supplication for forgiveness) for him and Isaal-e-Sawab (conveying reward of good deeds) to him are all permissible.

As mentioned in Durr-e-Mukhtar:

من قتل نفسہ ولو عمدا یغسل ویصلی علیہ بہ یفتی
