Is it Wajib (necessarily) or Mustahab (recommended) to answer the call to Prayer (Adhaan) with the tongue?

Answer

There are two types of responses to the Adhan. First is the verbal response, meaning repeating the same words that the Mu’adhdhin (person giving Adhan) is saying. Second is the physical response, meaning going and joining the congregation upon hearing the call to prayer.

There are many virtues mentioned in the blessed Ahadeeth regarding verbally responding to the Adhan. One of those virtues is that the person who does so will enter Paradise. Verbally responding is Mustahabb (recommended) for both men and women in all conditions, but it is not Wajib (necessary). However, it is not recommended in situations where the remembrance of Allah is prohibited, such as when using the toilet or while praying or listening to the Khutbah.

As for the physical response, there are also many virtues mentioned in the Ahadeeth, and severe warnings for those who neglect it. However, this is only Wajib (necessary) upon those for whom praying in congregation is Wajib (necessary). It does not mean responding to it immediately, but rather it means not missing the congregation.

It is stated in Sahih Muslim that Hazrat Umar bin Khattab رضی اللہ عنہ narrated:

قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: ” إذا قال المؤذن: الله أكبر الله أكبر، فقال أحدكم: الله أكبر الله أكبر، ثم قال: أشهد أن لا إله إلا الله، قال: أشهد أن لا إله إلا الله، ثم قال: أشهد أن محمدا رسول الله قال: أشهد أن محمدا رسول الله، ثم قال: حي على الصلاة، قال: لا حول ولا قوة إلا بالله، ثم قال: حي على الفلاح، قال: لا حول ولا قوة إلا بالله، ثم قال: الله أكبر الله أكبر، قال: الله أكبر الله أكبر، ثم قال: لا إله إلا الله، قال: لا إله إلا الله من قلبه دخل الجنة۔

It is stated in Rad ul mukhtar:

والذي ينبغي تحريره في هذا المحل أن الإجابة باللسان مستحبة وأن الإجابة بالقدم واجبة إن لزم من تركها تفويت الجماعة۔

In Kashf al astaar Mufti Muhammad Amjad Ali Azmi رحمۃ اللہ علیہ states:

فالحق عندى ان الاجابة باللسان مستحبة والاجابة بالقدم واجبة بحيث لاتفوته الجماعة من غير عذر لكن هذا الوجوب ليس على الفور بان يترك جميع مشاغله حين سمع النداء بل له رخصة الى ان يحضر وقت الجماعة

It is stated in Kashf al astaar:

ويجيب السامع مطلقاً في كل حال الا في حال منع من ذكر الله بلسانه كالجماع والتغوط وكذا إذا كان في الصلاة واستماع الخطبة
