[Q 473] Islamic View on App-Based Coupon Offers

QUESTION:

Salam, a store offers a coupon reward when qualifying spends reaches the relevant spend targets in store in a month, is it allowed to get these types of rewards please guide thanks.

All of this takes place through an app.
Then, when a customer reaches a specific spend target, the company gives them a reward coupon, which they can use within seven days.

For example, if you spend fifty pounds on groceries or other items, the store or company will give you some discount on the products or provide you with something for free. The record of all your purchases is saved on the store’s app, and rewards are given based on that record.

The purpose of the stores in doing this is to increase the sales of their products and to get as many people as possible to use their app.

ANSWER:

According to the explanation provided in the question, the coupon reward has the Shar‘i (Islamic legal) status of a Inaam (reward) or Tohfa (gift). If a person makes purchases up to the amount and within the time period specified by the store, and the store then gives a reward, it is permissible to accept it.

This condition does not contradict the requirements of a Bai‘ (sale) contract, nor does it render the transaction invalid (Fasid). Rather, it is simply an offer or wa‘dah (promise) from the company.

Similarly, it does not fall under Riba (interest), because Riba involves a conditional benefit on a Qarz (loan), and no such situation exists here.

Therefore, the rewards received from these coupon offers may be used, provided there is no other Shar‘i reason for prohibition.
