[Q 671]Naming Animals with Muslim Names

Question

What’s the ruling on naming animals with Muslim names please?

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

الجواب بعون الملك الوهاب اللهم هداية الحق والصواب

Answer

It is permissible to name animals; in fact, it is established from the Sunnah. The Noble Prophet ﷺ, had named his mounts and other possessions, such as his donkey, which was named Ya’fur.

However, it is not permissible to name animals with names typically used by Muslims that are considered part of Islamic identity and are sacred, such as Abdullah, Abdur Rahman, and other similar names. Similarly, it is absolutely not permissible to name animals after sacred personalities.

Instead, names like Chand (Moon), Tara (Star), etc., should be given.
