QUESTION:
What is the Shariah ruling on keeping a beard longer than one fist (a handful) in length?
ANSWER:
Keeping a beard of one fist in length is Wajib (obligatory), and keeping it longer than one fist is Khilaf al-Afdal (contrary to what is preferable). However, if the beard exceeds one fist in length, then trimming the excess and keeping it to one fist is Sunnah, as this is established from the practice of the Noble Prophet صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم and the Sahabah (Companions) رضي الله تعالى عنهم. Furthermore, a beard that grows excessively beyond a reasonable limit and becomes a cause for people pointing fingers or drawing attention is contrary to the Sunnah and Makruh (disliked).
It is stated in Sunan al-Tirmidhi:
“أن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم، كان يأخذ من لحيته من عرضها وطولها”
“The Noble Prophet صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم would trim from the width and length of his beard.”
(Sunan al-Tirmidhi, Abwab al-Isti’dhan wa al-Adab, Hadith no. 2762)
Under this Hadith, it is stated in Mirqat al-Mafatih:
“وقيد الحديث في شرح الشرعة بقوله: إذا زاد على قدر القبضة ۔۔۔۔۔وزاد في الشرعة: وكان يفعل ذلك في الخميس أو الجمعة، ولا يتركه مدة طويلة.”
“In Sharh al-Shir‘ah, this Hadith is qualified with the statement that the Prophet صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم would do this when the blessed beard exceeded one fist in length. It is further mentioned in Al-Shir‘ah that he would do this on Thursday or Friday and would not leave it for a long period.”
It also states:
“فإن الطول المفرط يشوه الخلقة، ويطلق ألسنة المغتابين بالنسبة إليه، فلا بأس للاحتراز عنه على هذه النية.”
“Excessive length certainly distorts one’s appearance and gives opportunity to those who backbite to speak about him. Therefore, there is no harm in avoiding this with such an intention.”
(Mirqat al-Mafatih, vol. 8, p. 285, Peshawar)
It is stated in Sunan Abi Dawud:
“حدثنا مروان يعني ابن سالم المقفع قال رأيت ابن عمر يقبض علی لحيته فيقطع ما زاد علی الکف”
Marwan ibn Salim al-Muqaffa‘ said: “I saw Ibn ‘Umar رضي الله تعالى عنهما grasping his beard in his hand and cutting whatever exceeded a fist.”
(Sunan Abi Dawud, vol. 2, p. 306, Hadith no. 2357, Dar al-Fikr, Beirut)
It is stated in Al-Ikhtiyar li Ta‘lil al-Mukhtar (also mentioned in Fatawa Hindiyyah and Al-Bahr al-Ra’iq):
“والتقصير فيها سنة، وهو أن يقبض الرجل لحيته فما زاد على قبضته قطعه لأن اللحية زينة وكثرتها من كمال الزينة وطولها الفاحش خلاف السنة.”
(Al-Ikhtiyar, vol. 2, part 4, Kitab al-Karahiyyah, p. 208, Peshawar)
It is stated in Fatawa Ridawiyyah:
“The summary of the position of our scholars is that growing the beard to one fist is Wajib (obligatory), keeping more than that is Khilaf al-Afdal, and trimming the excess is Sunnah.”
(Fatawa Ridawiyyah, vol. 22, p. 589, Raza Foundation, Lahore)
In another place in Fatawa Ridawiyyah, it is stated:
“If beyond this (one fist), the length becomes excessive, goes beyond moderation, and appears inappropriate or unsightly, then it is undoubtedly contrary to the Sunnah and Makruh (disliked), because making one’s appearance unsightly, opening the door to mockery and criticism against oneself, and exposing Muslims to the sin of ridicule and backbiting are certainly not from the pleasure of the Sacred Shari‘ah.”
(Fatawa Ridawiyyah, vol. 22, pp. 581–582, Raza Foundation, Lahore)
