What is the ruling on wearing a silver or plastic headband to keep hair back?

ANSWER:

For a woman, using a silver or plastic headband is permissible, because this is also a type of adornment (zeenat – adornment), and it is permissible for a woman to use jewelry made of silver and plastic.

As for men, the ruling is that if such a headband is specifically made for men, and it is not used only by sinful people (fussaq – open sinners), rather it is commonly used by both sinful and pious people (saalih – righteous), then its use is permissible. However, if it is only used by sinful people, or its use results in resemblance to women (tashabbuh bin-nisa – imitation of women), then its use for men is impermissible and sinful.
