[Q 664] Combining Qada and Nafl Fast

QUESTION:

I have due kaffara for a nafli roza (mistakenly iftaar before iftaar time). Can I “make intention” for qaza of that roza in 9/10 Moharram roza?? My qaza roza will also be accepted?

ANSWER:

In the situation mentioned, your Qada (make-up) fast will be valid. This is because when the intention is made for both a Qada fast and a Nafl (voluntary) fast, the Qada fast is the one that is fulfilled. In other words, only one fast can be observed at a time. However, due to your good intention, it is also hoped that you will receive the reward of fasting on that blessed day.

It is stated in Radd al-Muhtar:

“اذاجمع بین فرض وتطوع فانہ یکون مفترضاعندھمالقوتہ”
(Radd al-Muhtar, vol. 2, p. 155)

It is stated in Fatawa ‘Alamgiriyyah:

“اذانوی قضا ء بعض رمضان والتطوع یقع عن رمضان فی قول ابی یوسف رحمہ اللہ وھو روایۃ عن ابی حنیفۃ رحمہ اللہ کذا فی الذخیرۃ”
(Fatawa ‘Alamgiriyyah, vol. 1, p. 197)
