[Q 609] Consumption of Sugar Alcohol

QUESTION:

What is the ruling on the consumption of sugar alcohol, also known as Polyols.

ANSWER:

It’s permissible to consume substances which are categorized as Sugar Alcohols, given that the products containing them are permissible to eat.

The blessed Shari’ah has made clear those things that are lawful and those that are prohibited. Sugar Alcohols do not have any substance or characteristic which is prohibited according to the rules of Shari’ah.

Sugar Alcohols do not intoxicate, they are not taken from an impure source nor do they harm the body. They are only called ‘Sugar Alcohols’ because their chemical structure resembles a mix of the structures of alcohol and sugar molecules. They do not have the intoxicating properties of alcohol. Just having the word Alcohol in its name will not make it Haram.
