[Q 594] Musafir Status in Air Travel

QUESTION:

If you are a traveller according to Shariah and you are travelling in an airplane that, during the flight, flies over the borders of your hometown but lands outside the borders of your hometown, are you still a traveller after arriving or should you pray like usual after landing?

ANSWER:

In the described situation, upon reaching the airport, the person will still be considered a musafir (traveller) and will continue to perform Qasr (shortened prayer). This will remain the case until he physically enters the boundaries of his city, because merely entering the airspace of the city by airplane does not count as entering the city itself.
