[Q 558] Rainwater Entering Throat in Fast

QUESTION:

If a raindrop/s fall into your mouth when your fasting will the fast become invalid? Jazakallah

ANSWER:

If rainwater enters the mouth of a person who is fasting and then passes down the throat, his Sawm (fast) will break, whether this occurred while he was awake or while he was asleep.

It is mentioned in Tuhfat al-Fuqaha:

و كذلك الصائم إذا فتح فاه و رفع رأسه إلى السماء فوقع قطرة من المطر في حلقه يفسد صومه لأنه نادر و كذلك إذا وجد في حلق النائم يفسد صومه لأنه نادر
(Tuhfat al-Fuqaha, Vol. 1, p. 354, Dar al-Kutub al-‘Ilmiyyah, Beirut)

It is mentioned in Bahar-e-Shari‘at: If someone throws something towards a fasting person and it goes into his throat, the fast is invalidated. If a person drinks water or eats something while asleep, or he had opened his mouth and a drop of water or hail entered his throat, the fast is invalidated.

(Bahar-e-Shari‘at, Vol. 1, Part 5, p. 987, Maktabat al-Madinah, Karachi)
