[Q 550] Ruling on Top Button in Salah

QUESTION:

Some ulema say the top button on the qamees is wajib to be closed during Salah, is this true? And if it is wajib, if before Salah person closes it and during Salah it opens, does the person have to repeat Salah?

ANSWER:

While performing Salah, it is not Wajib (obligatory) to close the top button of the qamees. However, if in the case of the button remaining open, the chest remains covered by the vest or any other garment, then there is no harm. If such a portion of the chest becomes visible that one would feel embarrassed to appear before elders in that condition, then the Salah will be Makruh Tanzihi (mildly disliked), meaning it is not necessary to repeat it, but it is Mustahab (recommended) to repeat such a Salah.

A‘la Hadrat عليه الرحمه states:

کسی کپڑے کو ایسا خلافِ عادت پہننا جسے مہذب آدمی مجمع یا بازار میں نہ کر سکے اور کرے تو بے ادب خفیف الحرکات سمجھا جائے یہ بھی مکروہ ہے جیسے انگرکھا پہننا اور گھنڈی یا باہر کے بند نہ لگانا یا ایسا کرتا جس کے بٹن سینے پر ہیں پہننا اور بوتام اتنے لگانا کہ سینہ یاشانہ کھلا رہے جبکہ اوپر سے انگرکھا نہ پہنے ہو یہ بھی مکروہ ہے اور اگر اوپر سے انگرکھا پہنا ہے یا اتنے بوتام لگا لئے کہ سینہ یاشانہ ڈھک گئے اگرچہ اوپر کا بوتام نہ لگانے سے گلے کے پاس کا خفیف حصہ کھلا رہا یاشانوں پر کے چاک بہت چھوٹے چھوٹے ہیں کہ بوتام نہ لگائیں جب بھی کرتا نیچے ڈھلکے گا شانے ڈھکے رہیں گے توحرج نہیں۔
