QUESTION:
Can a husband celebrate valentines day with his wife?
ANSWER:
Valentine’s Day, in which non-Mahram (ghayr mahram – those whom one is not permanently unlawful to marry) men and women generally give gifts to one another or express love, is a Haram (forbidden) festival that consists of immodesty and other sins. It is necessary for Muslims to abstain from it.
However, a husband expressing love to his wife and giving her gifts is permissible; rather, with a good intention it is a cause of reward (sawab). This may be done on any day. Muslims should treat their wives with goodness and kindness without participating in or considering good any such festival like Valentine’s Day.
