[Q 502] Wudu and Leather Socks

QUESTION:

Dear Respected Mufti’s and Scholars, what is the ruling on doing wudu on a prosthetic leg and wiping it, to wear a leather sock?

ANSWER:

In order to perform Masah (Masah – wiping in wudu) while wearing socks, it is necessary that at least the front portion of the real foot, equal to the extent of three fingers, is present. Therefore, if a person’s foot has been amputated and a prosthetic (artificial) foot has been fitted in its place, then Masah cannot be performed on it. It is also not permissible that a person performs Masah by wearing a sock only on the healthy foot; rather, now washing the feet becomes Fard (Fard – obligatory).

(قوله ثم المسح على الظاهر) أي ظاهر محل الفرض وهو مقدم الرجل إذا وجد منه قدر ثلاث أصابع، ولو قطعت إحدى رجليه وبقي منها أقل منه أو بقي ثلاث أصابع لكن من العقب لا من موضع المسح فلبس على الصحيحة والمقطوعة لا يمسح لوجوب غسل ذلك الباقي كما لو قطعت من الكعب حيث يجب غسل الرجلين ولا يمسح

(تنبيه): شرطه بقاء قدر المفروض من كل من القدمين من محل الفرض وهو مقدم الرجل إذ لو قطعت إحدى رجليه وبقي منها أقل منه أو قدره لكن من العقب لا يمسح لوجوب غسل ذلك الباقي كما لو قطعت من الكعب حيث يجب غسل الرجلين ولا يمسح كما في الفتح
