[Q 478] Cleaning Masjid Carpet with Chemicals

QUESTION:

If there is a stain on the Masjid carpet, is it permissible to use a chemical (such as a nail polish remover) to clean it — provided it does not contain alcohol, only water and other non-intoxicating ingredients?

ANSWER:

If there is a stain such as paint, etc., on the Masjid carpet, then using a chemical made from pāk ajzāʾ (pure ingredients), which has no bad odor and does not leave a mark on the carpet, is jā’iz (permissible) for cleaning it.

However, if the chemical has a strong or unpleasant smell, then its use is not permitted, because bringing a foul-smelling substance into the Masjid or spreading odor within it is impermissible. In such a case, one should use another substance that is free from bad odor.
