QUESTION:
If I read 1 Surah fatiha for both my grandads does the reward go to both of them or only one, do I have to read 1 each for both e.t.c please let me know ?
ANSWER:
Tilawat-e-Qur’an Majeed (recitation of the Holy Qur’an) or the reward of any other virtuous deed may be conveyed (Eesal-e-Sawab) to more than one deceased. If you recite Surah Fatiha once and convey its reward to both of your elders (your paternal grandfather and maternal grandfather), then this is permissible. However, if you recite separately for each of them and then convey the reward, that is better, as they will receive greater reward.
Regarding conveying reward to multiple deceased by reciting only once, Mufti Amjad Ali Aazmi رحمه الله تعالى writes:
“When one visits the graveyard, one should recite Surah Al-Hamd (Al-Fatiha), Surah Alif Laam Meem until Muflihoon, Ayat al-Kursi, Surah Aamanar-Rasool until the end of the Surah, Surah Yaseen, Surah Tabarakalladhi, Surah Alhakum-ut-Takathur once each, and Surah Qul Huwallahu Ahad twelve times, or eleven, or seven, or three times, and then convey the reward of all of them to the deceased.”
