QUESTION:
Are you not allowed to wear things that are sewed when going umrah?
ANSWER:
For men, Ihram consists of two unstitched sheets, and it is not permissible for men to wear stitched clothing. If someone wears stitched clothing for twelve hours or more, a Dam (sacrifice of an animal) becomes Wajib (obligatory) upon him. If it is worn for less than this duration, then one Sadaqat al-Fitr becomes necessary.
For women, however, their Ihram is their normal clothing. Hence, it is not prohibited for women to wear stitched garments.
It in stated in Al-Fatawa al-Hindiyyah:
إذا لبس المحرم المخيط على الوجه المعتاد يوما إلى الليل فعليه دم، وإن كان أقل من ذلك فصدقة.
(Al-Fatawa al-Hindiyyah, Kitab al-Manasik, Chapter Eight: On Penalties, Section Two, vol. 1, p. 242)
Badai al sanai stated:
“أن المحرم ممنوع عن لبس المخيط”
(Bada’i al-Sana’i, Kitab al-Hajj, vol. 2, p. 144, Dar al-Kutub al-‘Ilmiyyah, Beirut)
