Is it permissible to wear sunglasses in the state of Ihram?

In the state of Ihram, there is no Shar’i objection to wearing sunglasses. Because the prohibition of covering the face or head is only if the covering is of a type that is customarily considering covering. Firstly, the lenses of sunglasses do not even touch the face or eyes. Secondly, even though part of the sunglasses might touch the skin of the face, it is not considered as covering the face in a customary manner. Therefore, it is similar to placing a basket or a tray on the head, where part of the basket or tray might touch the head, but it is not considered as covering the head customarily.

It is mentioned in Kanz al-Daqaiq:

Under this, it is explained in Bahr al-Raiq:

“And the general statement of covering refers to the complete covering and this is what is normally considered as covering, such as a cap or a turban, and what is not customarily used for covering is taken out of this, such as a tray or a basin; there is no problem for such coverings… By ‘head,’ it refers to any part of the body that is prohibited to cover for the one in Ihram, hence face is included.”
