[Q 451] Entering the Toilet with Na‘layn Shareef Brooch, Ruling on Sacred Symbols in Bathroom, Etiquette of Carrying Blessed Insignia

QUESTION:

Is it permissible to enter the toilet or bathroom when one have a na’layn shareef brooch on him?

ANSWER:

Wearing a brooch that bears the design of the Blessed Sandals (Na‘layn Shareef) of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم, or any badge with sacred names or holy sites, and then entering the washroom with it has been deemed Makrooh (disliked) and disrespectful by the scholars. Therefore, one should avoid this.

It is best to remove the brooch before entering the washroom and place it in a safe and respectable place. If leaving it outside is not possible, then one should put it in a pocket or wrap it in a cloth so that it is not exposed while in the washroom.

It is narrated that the Noble Prophet صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم would remove his blessed ring on which “محمد رسول الله” (Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah) was inscribed when entering the washroom.

From Sunan al-Tirmidhi and Sunan al-Nasa’i:

عن انس رضی الله عنه قال: كان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم إذا دخل الخلاء نزع خاتمه

Translation: Hazrat Anas رضي الله تعالى عنه reports: “When the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم entered the washroom, he would remove his ring.”

(Sunan al-Tirmidhi, Bab Ma Ja’a fi Naqsh al-Khatam, Vol. 1, p. 437)

A‘la Hazrat Imam Ahmad Raza Khan رحمہ الله تعالی writes:
“If a person has a ring on which words from the Qur’an, the Blessed Name of Allah Almighty, the name of the Qur’an, or the names of Prophets or Angels عليهم السلام are inscribed, then when entering the toilet, he should remove it and place it outside. This is best. If he fears it may be lost, he should place it in his pocket or wrap it in something; this is also permissible, though avoiding it without necessity is better. If none of these are done and he enters with it exposed, this is Makrooh.”
