[Q 419] Covering the Collarbone in Salah, Is Exposed Collarbone Makruh in Salah, Ruling on Uncovered Collarbone in Prayer

QUESTION:

During salah does the collarbone need to be covered?
Is it mustahab to be covered in salah or is it makruh if it’s not covered?

ANSWER:

During salah (prayer), it is behtar (better/preferable) for the hansli ki haddi (collarbone) to be covered.
If one performed salah while the collarbone was exposed, then it is not makruh (disliked).

Sayyidi Imam Ahmad Raza Khan Qadiri رحمه الله تعالى writes:

“If the upper button is not fastened and a slight portion near the neck remains exposed, or if the shoulder seams are very short and even then the shirt hangs low enough that the shoulders remain covered, then there is no harm.”
