[Q 354] Barber Applying Scented Products Before Haircut in Ihram

Question

1. When having a haircut, barbers sometimes place scented liquids and products on your head. What is the ruling on this? It’s sometimes liquid and sometimes some sort of powder.

2. They sometimes wipe your head with a brush/towel/tissue, etc. What is the ruling on this as you aren’t allowed to put anything on the face and head during Ihram? And we are still in Ihram during the haircut, aren’t we?

الجواب بعون الملك الوهاب اللهم هداية الحق والصواب

Answer

1. After completing Umrah, a person remains in the state of Ihram until they perform Halq (shaving the head) or Taqsir (trimming the hair).

Therefore, before getting a haircut, if the barber wants to apply scented products such as powder, fragrant shampoo, or any liquid, you should prevent them from doing so.
Instead, ask them to wet your hair with unscented water and then cut the hair.

2. Similarly, if the barber wants to place a cloth or tissue on your head or face, you should not allow it. However, covering other parts of the body with a cloth or similar item is permissible.
