[Q 517] List of Male and Female Mehrams

QUESTION:

Salam Can you give me a list of all the female and male mehrams

ANSWER:

All those from whom a person is born, such as the mother and father, paternal grandparents (dada, dadi), and maternal grandparents (nana, nani) and upwards, all of these relationships are included among Mehram (permanently unmarriageable relatives).

Similarly, those who are a person’s offspring, such as son and daughter, grandson and granddaughter, maternal grandson and granddaughter, and their descendants downwards, all these relationships are also included among Mehram.

Likewise, brothers and sisters, whether they are full siblings, maternal half-siblings, or paternal half-siblings, they themselves and their offspring downwards (such as nephew, niece, etc.) are also included among Mehram.

Similarly, paternal uncle (chacha), maternal uncle (mamu), maternal aunt (khala), and paternal aunt (phuppi) are Mehram, but their children are not Mehram; rather, they are Ghair Mehram (non-Mehram).

Likewise, for a man, his mother-in-law (saas) is Mehram, and for a woman, her father-in-law (sasur) is Mehram. However, elder brother-in-law (jeth), younger brother-in-law (dewar), and sister-in-law (saali) are Ghair Mehram relationships.

The Mehram relationships that have been mentioned—if there exists a relationship of Rada‘at (milk-relationship) with anyone—carry the same ruling. Meaning, whoever is Mehram due to Nasabi (blood relationship) will also be Mehram due to Rada‘at (milk relationship).
