[Q 462] Fireworks on Milaad Celebration, Ruling on Fireworks in Islam, Is Fireworks for Milaad Allowed?

QUESTION:

Can you do fireworks with intention of celebrating milaad۔

ANSWER:

Just as doing fireworks on other occasions is impermissible (Na-Jaiz – unlawful) and sinful due to wastage of wealth (Ziya-e-Maal – wasting money) and engaging in amusement and play (Lahw-o-La‘ib – frivolity), in the same way, doing fireworks on the happiness of Milaad Shareef is even more impermissible and sinful. This is absolutely not allowed. Rather, the order is to celebrate Milaad Shareef by engaging in Dhikr Allah (remembrance of Allah), Na’at (poetry in praise of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم), Durood-o-Salaam (salutations), and other virtuous actions in accordance with the manner taught by the Ulama Ahl-e-Sunnat (scholars of Ahl al-Sunnah).

“Among the evil innovations (Bid‘at Shani‘ah) are those practices which have become known and prevalent in most cities of India, such as gathering to play and amuse with fire, and burning sulphur, i.e., doing fireworks.”

(Ma Thabata bis-Sunnah, Al-Maqalah Al-Thalithah, p. 216, Matbua Hind)

A’la Hazrat Imam Ahmad Raza writes:
“Fireworks, as they are common in weddings and Shab-e-Bara’at, are without doubt Haram (forbidden) and a complete crime, because it is Tazyi‘-e-Maal (wastage of wealth). In the Qur’an, Allah Almighty has called such people the brothers of Shaytan:

لَا تُبَذِّرْ تَبْذِیۡرًا اِنَّ الْمُبَذِّرِیۡنَ کَانُوۡۤا اِخْوَانَ الشَّیٰطِیۡنِ وَکَانَ الشَّیۡطٰنُ لِرَبِّہٖ کَفُوۡرًا
(Allah Almighty has stated: Do not waste wealth extravagantly. Surely the extravagant are the brothers of Shaytan, and Shaytan is ever ungrateful to his Lord.)
