QUESTION:
Is it permissible to enter the toilet or bathroom when one have a na’layn shareef brooch on him?
ANSWER:
Scholars have declared it makrooh (disliked) and disrespectful to go into the washroom while wearing a badge with the image of the blessed sandals (Na’layn Shareef) of the Beloved Prophet صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم, or a badge containing sacred names or holy places. Therefore, one should avoid this. Before entering the washroom, remove the badge and place it in a suitable place outside. If placing it outside is not possible, then put it inside your pocket or wrap it in a piece of cloth before entering, so that as much as possible, the badge is not exposed while in the washroom.
The Noble Prophet صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم would remove his blessed ring, upon which “محمد رسول الله” (Muhammad Rasool Allah) was inscribed, before entering the toilet. It is mentioned in Sunan al-Nasa’i and Sunan al-Tirmidhi:
“عن انس رضي الله عنه قال: كان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم اذا دخل الخلاء نزع خاتمه”
Translation: Hazrat Anas رضي الله تعالى عنه narrates that when the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم would enter the toilet, he used to remove his blessed ring.
(Sunan al-Tirmidhi, Chapter: What has been mentioned about the engraving of the ring, Vol. 1, p. 437)
A’la Hazrat Imam Ahmad Raza Khan رحمہ الله تعالى writes:
“If someone has such a ring on his hand upon which are inscribed some words from the Holy Qur’an, or blessed names such as the name of Allah Almighty, or the name of the Noble Qur’an, or the names of Prophets and Angels عليهم الصّلوۃ والثناء, then it is commanded that when he goes to the toilet, he should remove the ring from his hand and place it outside. This is best. And if there is a fear of it being lost, then he should put it in his pocket or wrap it in something else. This too is permissible, though avoiding it without necessity is better. If none of these are followed and one goes to the toilet as it is, then such an act is makrooh (disliked).”
