[Q 426] Saying “Sayyiduna” in Salah, Adding “Sayyiduna” in Durood, Respectful Additions in Salah

ANSWER:

When reciting Durood Shareef during Salah, adding the word Sayyiduna (our master) before the blessed name of the Noble Prophet صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم is Afdal (superior), as it expresses greater reverence and respect. However, the wording of Tashahhud is specific, and no additions are permitted in it.

It is stated in Radd al-Muhtar:

“والأفضل الإتيان بلفظ السيادة كما قاله ابن ظهيرية، و صرح به جمع، و به أفتى الشارح لأن فيه الإتيان بما أمرنا به، و زيادة الإخبار بالواقع الذي هو أدب، فهو أفضل من تركه”

It is written in Bahar-e-Shariat:

“In Durood Shareef, saying Sayyiduna before the blessed names of Huzoor Sayyid-e-Aalam صلى الله تعالى عليه وسلم and Huzoor Sayyiduna Ibrahim عليه الصلوۃ والسلام is better.”

Imam Ibn Nujaym Misri رحمه الله تعالى state:

لأنهم جعلوا التشهد واجبا وعينوه في تشهد ابن مسعود فكان واجبا، ولهذا قال في السراج الوهاج ويكره أن يزيد في التشهد حرفا أو يبتدئ بحرف قبل حرف قال أبو حنيفة، ولو نقص من تشهده أو زاد فيه كان مكروها؛ لأن أذكار الصلاة محصورة فلا يزاد عليها اهـ.
