[Q 384] Insulin Injection While Fasting

Question

What is the ruling on taking an insulin injection while fasting?

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم
الجواب بعون الملك الوهاب اللهم هداية الحق والصواب

Answer

Taking an insulin injection while fasting is permissible and does not break the fast. This is because, generally, the needle of an injection does not reach the Jauf (internal cavity) or the brain, nor does it create a temporary passage through which the medicine could reach the Jauf. Therefore, this injection does not invalidate the fast.
Similarly, the entry of substances through skin pores (Masaamat) does not affect fasting, just as applying oil to the body does not break the fast. Although oil is absorbed into the body, it enters through the pores, which does not contradict the conditions of fasting.

It is stated in Fatawa Faiz-ur-Rasool:
“It is established that an injection does not break the fast, whether it is administered into a vein or muscle.”

(Fatawa Faiz-ur-Rasool, Kitab As-Sawm, Vol. 1, p. 514, Shabbir Brothers, Lahore)
