[Q 128] Toilet Position Facing the Qibla

Question

If ones toilet was positioned in a way that when they were relieving themselves, they were facing the Qibla or had their back towards the Qibla, without any intention of disrespect, does the person have to replace the toilet position?

Answer

Facing the Qibla or showing one’s back to it while relieving oneself in the WC, whether intentionally or unintentionally, is makruh tahrimi (severely disliked and sinful).

Therefore, if someone’s WC is positioned such that one’s back or face is towards Qibla, it should be immediately repositioned such that the Qibla is out of 45 degree angle on either side. If it cannot be changed, one should change their position while sitting.

It is narrated in Sahih Ul Bukhari:

عن أبي أيوب الأنصاري، أن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم قال: «إذا أتيتم الغائط فلا تستقبلوا القبلة، ولا تستدبروها ولكن شرقوا أو غربوا» قال أبو أيوب: «فقدمنا الشأم فوجدنا مراحيض بنيت قبل القبلة فننحرف، ونستغفر الله تعالی

It is stated in Aldur ul Mukhtar:

کرہ) تحریما (استقبال قبلۃ و استدبارھا ل) اجل (بول او غائط)۔۔۔ (ولو فی بنیان) لاطلاق النھی (فان جلس مستقبلا لھا) غافلا (ثم ذکرہ انحرف) ندبا لحدیث الطبری : ”من جلس یبول قُبالۃ القبلۃ فذکرھا فانحرف عنھا اِجلالا لھا لم یقم من مجلسہ حتی یغفر لہ“۔
