[Q 314] Using Vaseline on Lips During Ihram

Question

Can we use this Vaseline on the lips in the state of Ihram? It doesn’t say fragrance in the ingredients and doesn’t have a smell that I could sniff. Some of the other versions of this have fragrance in it, but this one doesn’t say fragrance in the ingredients and also doesn’t say fragrance-free. If I don’t use this, it causes severe dryness and damages the lips, which I have experienced when I didn’t use it in the state of Ihram during Umrah.

Answer

If the company has not stated whether the Vaseline is scented or not, you should smell the Vaseline yourself to determine if it has a scent. If no scent is detected, you may use such Vaseline while in the state of Ihram.

By scent, it is meant a pleasant and desirable fragrance, not the original smell of the Vaseline.

Therefore, if the Vaseline you have does not have any fragrance, it is permissible to use it on the lips to prevent severe dryness and damage during Ihram.
