[Q 294] Janazah Salah in the Masjid: Hanafi Perspective

Question

Mufti Saab I’ve got Question? How is it to offer the funeral Salah in the Masjid?

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

الجواب بعون الملك الوهاب اللهم هداية الحق والصواب

Answer

According to Hanafi Fiqh, offering the funeral Salah (Janazah prayer) inside the mosque is considered Makruh Tahrimi, meaning it is impermissible and sinful, whether the body is inside or outside the mosque.

However, if there is a valid Shariah excuse, such as severe rain and no other sheltered place is available except the mosque, then it is permissible to conduct the Janazah Salah in the mosque.

Similarly, if in a certain country, performing the Janazah inside the mosque is commonly accepted & practiced among Muslims, then it is not considered sinful there. Even in such cases, efforts should be made as much as possible to not keep the body inside the mosque but rather have it placed outside in front of the Imam.
