Question

Mufti Sahib I had a question. When Allah says in the Quran 38:75: «O Iblis! What has prevented you from prostrating before which i created with my own hands»

What does «hands» mean in this. What is the rulling on one who hold such belifes, and how can we prove that this belief is wrong?

Answer

The term (يَد) mentioned in such verses belongs to the Mutashabihat (متشابهات), meaning its linguistic definition is known but its true nature is not. Therefore, one should not engage in debate about such verses. Yes, it is our belief that “Yad” is an attribute of Allah, whose reality is best known by Him, and Allah is free from having a body or physical attributes.

It is He Who has sent down to you (O Beloved) this Book (i.e. the Qur’aan); parts of its verses are with clear meanings; they are the foundation of the Book, and there are other verses with unclear meanings. Those in whose hearts is deviation (from the truth) pursue the verses having unclear meanings; desiring misguidance and seeking its (wrongful) interpretation; and only Allah knows its true meaning. And those having sound knowledge say, ‘We believe in it; all this is from our Lord.’ And no one accepts advice but the people of intelligence.

(Surah Al Imran, Ayah 7)
