[Q 283] Clarifying Wedding Expense Responsibilities in Islam

Question

I’ve heard someone say that in Islam it’s fard upon the guy’s side to cover all the expenses of the girl’s side for wedding.?

Answer

This statement is not correct. According to Islamic law, the bride’s mahr, which is mutually agreed upon, is the responsibility of the husband. Additionally, after marriage, the husband is responsible for providing the wife with housing, food, clothing, etc. Other expenses related to wedding ceremonies and customs are not the husband’s responsibility; instead, each family handles these according to their own means.
