[Q 240] New Muslims: Reverts or Converts?

Question

Question from a brother: Should new Muslims be referred to as ‘reverts’ or ‘converts’ and why?

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

الجواب بعون الملك الوهاب اللهم هداية الحق والصواب

Answer

For a new Muslim, both terms ‘revert’ and ‘convert’ can be used without any issue. Originally, every person is born on the natural disposition (Fitrah) of Islam, but due to their parents or society, they drifted towards false religions, and now they have returned to their natural disposition, i.e., the religion of Islam. From this perspective, such a person can be called a ‘revert’. In common usage or to make it understandable to people that this person was previously following another false religion and has now come to Islam, such person can be called a ‘convert’.
