[Q 233] Is it necessary for a woman to sell her jewellery in order to perform Hajj?

Question

I have some savings in the form of gold and silver jewelry equivalent to the amount of money that is sufficient for me and my Mahram to go on Hajj. Is Hajj Fard on me in this case? Do I need to sell my jewelry and perform the Haj?

الجواب بعون الملك الوهاب اللهم هداية الحق والصواب

Answer

If you do not have any debt upon you or you have a debt but after deducting the debt amount, you still have jewelry of such monetary value that through it your and your Mahram’s expenses for Hajj travel and basic necessary expenses there can be fulfilled, then Hajj is obligatory (Fardh) upon you in such a case. It is necessary for you to sell that jewelry and perform Hajj. And if your Mahram is ready to go with you for Hajj by bearing their own expenses, then Hajj is obligatory (Fardh) upon you in the condition that you have the ability to afford your own Hajj expenses.
