الجواب بعون الملك الوهاب اللهم هداية الحق والصواب

Answer

The silver ring that Islamic law has permitted a man to wear is one with a gemstone. And a ring without a gemstone is not a ring, rather it is called a challa which is a jewelry for women. It is not permissible for men to wear it.

It is proved from Ahadith that whenever the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ wore a ring, it had a gemstone in it. Furthermore, in Sahih Muslim there is a Hadith:

عن انس ابن مالک ان رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم لبس خاتم فضۃ فی یمینہ فیہ فص حبشی کان یجعل فصہ مما یلی

Translation:

“It is narrated from Hazrat Anas bin Malik رضی ﷲ عنہ that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ wore a silver ring on his right hand which had an Habshi (Abyssinian) gemstone set in it, and he kept the stone towards his palm.”

(Sahih Muslim, Vol. 2, Page 197, published Karachi)

Regarding wearing a challa (ring without gemstone), Imam Ahmad Raza Khan رحمة الله عليه states: “The silver challa is a special wear/dress for women. It is Makruh Tahrimi (extremely disliked) for men to wear it. And offering Prayers wearing something Makruh will also make the Prayer Makruh.

It is permissible for a man to wear a silver ring weighing less than 4.5 masha equivalent to 4.374 grams, with a gemstone in it.”
