[Q 199] After seeking forgiveness, do still have to make up my Salah?

Question

Hadith which is mentioned in Ibn Majah: “التائب من الذنب كمن لا ذنب له” – The one who repents is like the one who has not committed a sin at all.

Some people use this Hadith and say that if a person has missed his Salah and he repents from missing then he does not need to do Qaza i.e. make it up.

Mufti Saab what is the correct understanding of this Hadith?

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

الجواب بعون الملك الوهاب اللهم هداية الحق والصواب

Answer

The Hadith which has been mentioned in the question means that the sin is forgiven. It doesn’t entail that the thing which is upon him as being fulfilled.

For example, if you have borrowed money from someone and delay in the repayment in this case you are sinful, and if you seek forgiveness and do taubah you will be forgiven but you still have to give the money back. Like this if someone misses his Salah even after repenting he still has to make that Salah up.
