[Q 169] Covering Beyond Aurah in Salah: Manners and Rulings

Question

Why do men need to cover the whole body during salah when the aurah is from navel to and including the knee?

الجواب بعون الملك الوهاب اللهم هداية الحق والصواب

Answer

In order for a man’s prayer to be correct, it is a condition to cover as much of the part as you have mentioned, i.e. from the navel to the knee (which includes the knee), but covering the rest of the body is also part of the manners. Because when a servant goes to a honorable person, he hides his whole body and wears good clothes, and dislikes going in front of him with his stomach, back or arms open, when going in front of honorable people a lot of care is taken, it is more important to keep this in mind when going in the presence of Allah.

For this reason, the jurists have said it’s disliked (Makrooh) to pray by opening that part of the body which, if it is open, a person would feel ashamed to go to another honorable person. This ruling is for the one who has enough clothes but chooses not to. There is no harm for the one who does not have enough cloth to cover himself.
